Taylor Smith - Class of 2017
As the birthday celebrations continue at North Hertfordshire College, we’re shining a spotlight on Taylor Smith.
Taylor studied her Level 3 National Diploma in Children’s Play, Learning and Development from 2015 to 2017, and now works with us as a T Level Ambassador and Education & Early Years tutor!
Check out Taylor’s memories below:
What has your career journey looked like since your Level 3 course?
“I completed my Level 3 in 2017 and went to Brunel University to study a BA Hons in Education, which I completed in 2020. I then went on to study my PGCE Primary Education 3-11 at the University of Hertfordshire. During this time, I completed a placement that really affected my love of teaching. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do and if I even really wanted to be a teacher anymore.
“I graduated from my degree and was working as a manager in my family’s hospitality business. It was at this time that I bumped into Paula and Nadia (the curriculum leads for Education & Early Years), who mentioned there was a job available in the department, so I applied and I’ve never looked back!
“I’ve been teaching at the College since September 2021, so I’m now coming in my 5th year! I was originally employed as a coach and then Nina gave me some teaching hours and that helped me find where I wanted to be.”
How did NHC support you in your journey to becoming a teacher?
“The course equipped me with in-depth knowledge of child development, the importance of play in learning, and effective approaches to supporting children’s educational and emotional needs. This understanding enables me to share current, relevant practice with my own students now and prepare them for careers working with children. My tutors supported me into my next steps of university and made sure I was fully prepared academically and emotionally.
“I still apply my knowledge of child development, how to plan and deliver effective teaching and learning activities, and my determination to persevere in my work today.”
What are some of your favourite memories from being a student at NHC?
“I want to shoutout Jo Charles and Paula McCabe, who were my tutors when I was an NHC student. One of my favourite memories was going to the woods with Jo Charles, my tutor, most Wednesdays to draw the bluebells and build dens.”
