Harry Folgate - Class of 2020

To celebrate 35 years of North Hertfordshire College, we’re reaching out to student and staff alumni to find out more about their experience studying at NHC.

Harry Folgate, former apprentice who completed the NVQ level 3 Apprenticeship Business & Administration, was keen to share with us his experience of doing an apprenticeship at North Hertfordshire College. We’re hoping to see him soon when he comes back to meet the current business cohort as part of the NHC 35 celebrations!

How did NHC support you in preparing for your career?

“Completing the apprenticeship qualification with North Hertfordshire College allowed me to enter a career in the fundraising sector and has given me the confidence to now progress into a senior role.

“I now work with The Willow Foundation as a Senior Community Fundraising Officer.”

What takeaways from NHC do you use in your current role?

“The course helped me to develop skills in event management, budgeting, negotiation and public speaking which I use regularly in my current role.

“My apprenticeship position as a Fundraising Assistant at Garden House Hospice was a fabulous experience where I was lucky enough to get involved in different parts of the business including marketing, events and corporate activity. It gave me a real insight into how a business works.

“After passing my apprenticeship with a Distinction, I have further pursued a career in fundraising that has led me to complete a diploma in fundraising with the Chartered Institute of Fundraising.”

What’s your favourite memory of your time at NHC?

“My apprenticeship really was a springboard for my career in fundraising. During my time as an apprentice at the Garden House Hospice, I was proud to be the event lead for a firewalking fundraiser which raised over £7,500.

“The budgeting and organisation skills I learnt on the course also prepared me to manage the Hospice’s Charlie Chick campaign as an apprentice, working with businesses and community groups across Hertfordshire to raise over £10,000.”

Would you like to give a shoutout to any tutors, staff or friends from your time at NHC?

“I want to give a shoutout to my lecturer, Laura. Also, my apprenticeship tutor Yolande was very informative and helped me to prepare very well for the final exam. I really enjoyed meeting new people on the course.”
